Experiencing Forensic science: student perspective

Forensic Science is a class offered to juniors and seniors who have passed biology and are either currently enrolled in or have passed chemistry. The program of studies describes the class as follows:

CSI in the classroom! This course will emphasize the application of the biological and chemical sciences to investigating criminal activity. Emphasis will be on providing a definitive understanding of the role of the forensic science laboratory and the crime laboratory analyst. Students will analyze evidence to solve mock crimes, critique investigations, and learn to work as an investigative team.

This course sounds pretty cool if you are interested in going into the criminal justice system and working behind the scenes in a lab opposed to being a police officer on the front line. At first glance this class seems like an interesting elective anybody could be interested to take. As a sophomore i took forensic science with Mr.Perry. This class was really fun for me to take and I really enjoyed the interesting topics we learned about. We learned how to investigate bones, look at hairs under a microscope, blood typing, and a whole unit on toxicology. Learning about how to tell the difference between male and female bones as well as how doctors test your blood to see the blood type you are was really cool to be a part of. Throughout the course we watched forensic files and cold cases and had to follow how the lab techs solved the crimes. All of the tests they were running in the video  we were learning about in class and had the knowledge to complete the most basic version of the tests. At the end of the class Mr. Perry created a fake crime scene that encased a mystery we had to solve. We had to use all the skills we learned throughout the class to find out if it was a murder or just an accident. Overall, this class was a lot of work but was very fun and gave me an idea on if i wanted to pursue a career in the forensic science field.
